Opening: Helga Schubert worked as a psychotherapist and writer in East Germany. After publishing several books she withdrew from the literary world, returning to win the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2020 for her short story Vom Aufstehen (On Getting Up). Her collection of stories under the same name was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2021. Helga Schubert’s Ein Stundenbuch der Liebe (A Book of Hours of Love) is a powerful and poetic tale of how to keep one’s own sanity and preserve another’s dignity under such circumstances.

Ana Marwan grew up in Ljubljana and now lives as a freelance writer in Vienna. Der Kreis des Weberknechts (Among the Daddy Long Legs) was her debut novel. She was awarded the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2022 for her short story Wechselkröte (Green Toad). Her new novel, Zabubljena (Cocooned) was awarded the 2022 Kritiško sito for the best book of 2021 in Slovenia.

Katharina Hacker lives in Berlin where she is a freelance author. She made her debut in 1997 with Tel Aviv. Eine Stadterzählung (Tel Aviv. A story of the city). This was followed by more works, mainly in narrative form. She has received many awards for her literary output, including the 2006 German Book Prize for Die Habenichtse (The Have-Nots). Her first volume of “minute essays” came out in 2019 under the title of Darf ich dir das Sie anbieten? (May I present: You).

Aya Cissoko is a French writer, political scientist and former world champion boxer. She published her first book danbé in 2011 in collaboration with Marie Desplechin, which was subsequently adapted for film and released in Germany as Wohin ich gehe. Her second book n’ba came out in 2016. Her third book Au Nom De Tous Les Tiens has been translated into German under the title Kein Kind von Nichts und Niemand (No Child of Nothing and No One). Aya Cissoko gives a voice to all those who society makes continues to erase through discrimination and exclusion and often condemns to silence.

The event will be held in French with German translation.

Ece Temelkuran is a prize-winning Turkish author and journalist who lost her job at a major Turkish daily newspaper due to her opposition to the governing party. She now writes for The Guardian, The New York Times, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and DER SPIEGEL, amongst others. Ece Temelkuran won first prize at the 2017 Edinburgh International Book Festival and has received the Ambassador of New Europe award. Since 2016 she has lived in exile in Zagreb. Wille und Würde (Will and Dignity) represents a narrative for the present, for a world where humanity comes first.

Winner of the 2022 International Booker Prize, and of the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, for her novel, Tomb of Sand (Ret Samadhi in the Hindi original), Geetanjali Shree is known for her innovative use of language and structure. She has written four other novels and five collections of short stories. Besides English, her work has been translated into many languages. Mai paints a portrait of three generations of one family and relates the challenges of really understanding one another.

Speakers: The talk will be given by four students from Heidelberg University South Asia Institute, representing the group which traveled to Pakistan. They documented sounds, images and local knowledge, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in sides of Pakistan which are less well known to international audiences.

Samira El Ouassil is an author, actress, musician and politician. Since 2018 she has written the Wochenschau column for the Übermedien website, and has written an online column for DER SPIEGEL since 2020.

Friedemann Karig writes for publications including the Süddeutsche Zeitung, SZ-Magazin, Die Zeit and JETZT. His debut novel was Dschungel (Jungle) following Wie wir lieben. Vom Ende der Monogamie (How we love. On the end of monogamy), which came out in 2017.

Samira and Friedemann have co-moderated the Piratensender Powerplay podcast since 2020.

Geisterbahn tells the story of the Dorn family, a German Sinti family from Trier who were subjected to organized despotism as a result of the murderous racial policy of the Nazi regime. While researching her novel, Ursula Krechel examined holdings in the Documentation Center of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg.

Christian Pfeil is a member of the German Sinti community and a Holocaust survivor. He was born in the Lublin ghetto 1944 after his family were deported there from Trier. For many years he has campaigned to promote local commemoration in his home city.

The Zimbabwean writer, dramatist and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga has found worldwide fame through her novels. She is considered one of Africa’s most radical feminist voices and has campaigned over the course of many years for feminist issues and political change. She has won awards and prizes around the world, receiving the 2021 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. The Tambudzai Trilogy Nervous Conditions, The Book of Not, and This Mournable Body follow the life of the trilogy’s main character Tambudzai.

His debut novel Toxic Man is an auto-fictional account of escaping the terror of the middle classes, of finding yourself, presenting yourself and almost destroying yourself. The stunning story of a young man who wants to be loved and admired.

Reading through the night with Heidelberg’s authors. For the first time, the Long Night of Heidelberg Authors is taking place during the Literature Festival. Authors from the city’s literary scene present their diverse work at 10-minute intervals. A terrific evening as diverse and varied as the literary scene itself, putting the spotlight on texts published in the last two years.
Before the Reading Marathon, authors nominated for the Heidelberg Author’s Prize will give a series of short readings.

A reading in charts

Katja Berlin’s first book, Was wir tun, wenn der Aufzug nicht kommt (What we do if the lift doesn’t arrive) sold over 300,000 copies. It was followed by 14 books including several bestsellers. She has written columns for the Handelsblatt magazine and Berliner Zeitung. Her graphic column Torten der Wahrheit (Pie Charts of Truth) has appeared in ZEIT since 2015. In her current book What women have to justify themselves for Katja Berlin presents the modern world in satirical pie charts, pointing out the flaws in our politics and society with biting humor.

José F. A. Oliver is one of the most important poets writing in German today. His work has been recognized with many awards, including the 2021 Heinrich Böll Prize. His most recent volumes include wundgewähr (warrant of wounds) and In jeden Fluss mündet ein Meer (A sea flows into every river) He is the founder and curator of the Hausacher LeseLenz literature festival, and the poet-in-residence of the 2023 Federal Garden Show in Mannheim. In wundgewähr (warrant of wounds) José F. A. Oliver, “a word & world in the ear”, unpacks his “rucksack”. A gentle earthquake in every word.

Moderator: Marion Tauschwitz

The writer Anise Jafarimehr was born in East Kurdistan in Iran. Twice she was arrested and imprisoned by Iranian security forces for campaigning to preserve the Kurdish language and culture. In 2021 she was awarded a scholarship from the Writers-in-Exile program * of the German PEN Center. Her literary output includes a novel and several short stories such as Freiheitsturm (Tower of Freedom).

* The Writers-in-Exile Program of the German PEN Center provides grants for writers who face persecution. The program is funded on behalf of the Federal Government.
This event will be in English.

Spoken word poetry from the UNESCO City of Literature Manchester:
Reece Williams is a spoken word poet from Manchester with Jamaican and Trinidadian roots. In Heidelberg Reece Williams will give a solo performance of selections from his spoken word stagecraft. This event will be in English.

Vaiva Grainytė is one of Lithuania’s most important contemporary authors. In Heidelberg Vaiva will be presenting her richly varied literary output in a conversation. She will also present video extracts from her opera Sun and Sea and read from Gorilla’s Archive. The poems will be read in Lithuanian and German. The discussion will be held in English.

Tanja Maljartschuk is a multi-award-winning Ukrainian writer and journalist. Her first collection of stories came out in 2009, published in a German translation as Neunprozentiger Haushaltessig (Nine percent household vinegar). Tanja Maljartschuk received the 2018 Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for her text Frösche im Meer (Frogs in the Sea). How should we deal with the pain,anger and speechlessness which the war causes day after day? Tanja Maljartschuk pursues all these questions in her essays. At points analytical and composed, at others despairing, always mocking and full of wit.

Raoul Schrott is an Austrian writer and scholar specializing in literature and comparative literature. He has won many awards for his poetic and narrative writing, including the Leonce und Lena Prize (1995), the Peter Huchel Prize (1999) and the Joseph Breitbach Prize (2004). In 2023 he will take up the post of Ernst Jandl Lecturer in Poetry at the University of Vienna.

His collection of poems Angst vor Lyrik (Fear of Poetry) was published by Kunstmann in 2019, and now he is making is debut as a novelist with Der Boulevard des Schreckens (The Boulevard of Terror).

Ballaballa Balkan is one of the most popular independent podcasts. It's the one true podcast for palaver and polemic focusing on South-Eastern Europe, and this year the team are visiting Heidelberg for the Literature Festival. In Neues vom Ballaballa-Balkan (News from the Barmy Balkans), hosts Danijel Majić and Krsto Lazarević explore a wide range of topics about the region and its culture. They will be joined in the Literature Tent by the writer Tijan Sila to present contemporary literature from South-Eastern Europe. Dirk Oschmann is Professor of Modern German Literature at the Leipzig University. His article for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on this topic was widely shared and the subject of much comment. His book, which came out in February, prompted fierce debates and has held the top spot in the DER SPIEGEL bestseller list for weeks. In an incisive illumination of how the Othering of East and West German origins harms our society, Dirk Oschmann initiates a long-overdue discussion of identity.

The writer and journalist Katja Petrowskaja was born in Kyiv. She received the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2013 for her debut novel Vielleicht Esther (Maybe Esther), which deals with her family history. It was translated into over 30 languages and has won many awards. She lives in Tbilisi and Berlin. In her book The photo looked at me she writes poetically about photography.

Jakob Graf ist Autor, Schauspieler und Sprecher in Kinofilmen und Fernsehproduktionen. Derzeit ist er in der Rolle des Pathologen Dr. Phillipp Hartmann in der ARD-Krimiserie „Watzmann ermittelt“ zu sehen. Das im März erschienene Buch Flaschenpost vom Träumeling ist sein Kinderbuchdebüt. Ein ist ein Buch für Jung und Alt, für alle, die den Kleinen Prinzen lieben und die mit Douglas Adams schon mal Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis geflogen sind!

Julya Rabinowich is a writer and columnist. She was born in St Petersburg and has lived in Vienna since 1977. Her first book for young readers Dazwischen: Ich (Me, In Between) won several awards, including the Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize, the Austrian Children’s and Young People's Book Prize, and the LUCHS award. The follow-up novel, Dazwischen: Wir (Us, In Between) came out in 2022. A moving novel and a passionate call to resist exclusion and division in society.

Susan Kreller is a freelance journalist and author. She has been awarded a Kranichstein Literature Scholarship. Her work has been nominated for the German Children’s Literature Award four times, and her novel Schneeriese (Snow Giant) won the Award in 2015. Hannas Regen (Hanna’s Rain) is her most recent novel.
Professor Karin Vach is Rector of the Heidelberg University of Education. She co-edits the “Kinder- und Jugendliteratur aktuell” series on new children's and young people’s literature. In 2021 and 2022 she chaired the critics jury for the German Children’s Literature Award.

Ralph Caspers is an author and presenter for the famous children’s TV programs Die Sendung mit der Maus, Wissen macht Ah! and Quarks. He also writes non-fiction and children's books and has received many awards for his work and engagement. These include the Prix Jeunesse International, the Goldener Spatz, the Erich Kästner Television Prize and the Grimme Prize. He will be reading from two of his works in Heidelberg.
